Students must have health insurance coverage
The 91AV provides group plans for the consideration of undergraduate, graduate, and medical students through United Healthcare Student Resources (UHCSR).
All full-time students are required by the University to have complete health insurance coverage for health care received in Maine and/or the area in which they are studying/rotating. Additionally, all students enrolled in health professions programs must have insurance that will provide coverage for services received nationwide as well as “Needlestick” coverage for accidental exposure incidents in a clinical setting.
To ensure compliance with this requirement, all full-time on-ground students are automatically billed for the premium to enroll in the student health insurance plan once per policy year. Students may accept the University-suggested health insurance plan; may locate their own comparable plan; or if already covered by another equivalent plan, may opt out of the program by submitting a waiver.
Students will receive an email notification that will explain the University-sponsored plan in greater detail and instructions on the enrollment/waiver process at the appropriate time depending on their program start date.

2024–25 Spring Semester Enrollment/waiver period
The Open Enrollment/Waiver period for the Spring 2024 semester will begin on December 10, 2024, and run through January 19, 2025. This process is only for all new incoming graduate and undergraduate students who will start their program in January 2024. Students who participated in the 2024–25 Open Enrollment/Waiver period during the Fall 2024 semester do not need to take any additional action for the Spring 2025 semester.
All full-time students are required to complete either an “Enrollment/Opt-In” or “Waiver/Opt-Out” for the student-offered health insurance plan once per policy year. This online waiver must be done in addition to uploading health insurance information to the 91AV Student Patient Portal for the Student Health Center.
If you are covered by your own qualified policy and do not need the student-offered plan, you must complete a waiver online to opt-out of the student plan. The health insurance charge will be removed from your bill within 3–5 business days after completing the waiver.
If you are enrolling in the health insurance plan, please complete the enrollment process instead of waiting for auto-enrollment, as this delays the receipt of your health insurance ID card.
Students who do not complete a Spring 2025 semester waiver by the posted deadline (January 19, 2025) will be automatically enrolled in the UHCSR policy at a non-refundable premium.
*If you participated in the 2024–2025 Open Enrollment/Waiver period during the Fall 2024 semester, you do not need to take any additional action for the Spring 2025 semester. You will receive an error message if you attempt to access the enrollment/waiver site if you have already filed your 2024–25 selection during the Fall 2024 semester.
If You Have Lost Your Health Insurance
If you have lost your health insurance coverage — due to age, moving, cost, or a change in family — and want to enroll in the 91AV-offered policy with United Healthcare Student Resources (UHCSR) out of the open enrollment period, please email Student Financial Services at sfs@une.edu.
You will be asked to provide a letter from your insurance company if you have lost coverage or will be losing coverage. The letter must clearly indicate your coverage termination date.
