Stephen Fox, Ph.D.
Professor, Chemistry
Location
Stephen Fox hails from the United Kingdom. He moved to the United States in Fall 1981. As a graduate student he developed interest and skill in the synthesis of transition-metal complexes with chelating ligands. As a post-doctoral scholar at The Johns Hopkins University he studied complexes that modeled the structure of cytochrome oxidase. As a faculty member at the University of Louisiana-Monroe he initiated a research program involving a novel chelating ligand — naphthyridinediimine, to prepare complexes of two metals in mutual close proximity. He arrived at 91AV in Fall 2010; it is his honor to be here as both a science educator and a scientist — a teacher-scholar!

Research
Current research
As his primary research interest, Dr. Fox synthesizes and studies multi-metallic complexes of novel naphthyridine ligands. In this context, he has prepared a class of dicopper(I) compounds with unusually short separations between the metal centers similar to what is found in the enzyme site known as "Copper A;" he is currently studying the reactivity of these compounds. A secondary interest concerns the synthesis and study of novel platinum(II) complexes and the study of their interactions with DNA.
