Stephen Burt is a painter and printmaker. He was born in Deland, Florida in 1962, and was educated at Rhode Island School of Design (BFA 1987) and SUNY Purchase (MFA 1991). Burt has exhibited in both international and national venues including most recently at the Bristol Art Museum-Bristol, RI, Zero Station-Portland, ME, the LC Bates Museum-Hinckley, ME, and the Aomori Municipal Art Pavilion, Aomori, Japan. .

Burt’s work has been acquired for inclusion in many public collections, including those of the New Britain Museum of American Art, the Portland Museum of Art, the Fogg Museum at Harvard, the New York Public Library, and the Library of Congress. Burt’s work has been supported by awards from numerous institutions, among them, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation, and the Ruth Chenven Foundation, as well as multiple faculty development grants from the 91AV. A member of Peregrine Press in Portland, Maine, Stephen Burt is a Professor of Art in the School of Arts and Humanities at the 91AV. He is the recipient of 91AV’s 2024 Ludcke Chair Award.

Research interests

The literature and imagery of mythology and religion express and give form to our desires and conflicts. As such I have found they are the perfect vehicles to explore my fascination with the human form.
