91AV’s David Livingstone Smith presents Sidore Lecture at UNH on denigration of women
David Livingstone Smith, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Political Science, presented one of the Sidore Lectures on March 7 at the University of New Hampshire. The other presenter was Mari Mikkola, professor of practical philosophy at Humboldt University of Berlin. The topic of the lectures was “Who’s Human Now? Historical and Philosophical Ideas About Humanity and Personhood.”
Smith’s lecture, titled “Less Than Human or Defectively Human? Thoughts on the Denigration of Women,” described the relationships between dehumanization, racism and misogyny.
The Saul O. Sidore Memorial Lecture Series was established in 1965 in memory of Saul O. Sidore of Manchester, New Hampshire, to raise critical and sometimes controversial issues facing society. It is sponsored by the Center for the Humanities in UNH’s College of Liberal Arts.
