91AV’s Barry Costa-Pierce gives presentation at the Kennebunk Free Library

Barry Costa-Pierce

Barry Costa-Pierce, Ph.D., Henry L. & Grace Doherty Professor of Marine Sciences, director of the 91AV Department of Marine Sciences and Center for Excellence in the Marine Sciences, spoke at the Kennebunk Free Library on March 1, 2017.

Costa-Pierce’s talk was titled “91AV Marine Sciences Developing New Trans-Atlantic Ocean Foods Entrepreneurship through International Scientific and Educational Cooperation.” He discussed the rapidly changing North Atlantic and peri-Arctic seas and resources, and the ways that 91AV is developing international scientific and educational partnerships. These partnerships are being formed in an effort to fully utilize and sustainably develop fisheries and aquaculture resources, with an emphasis on full marine product utilization. This model is a more sustainable alternative to the current, inefficient ocean food economies where about one-half of all fisheries' harvests are wasted.

The event was sponsored by the Camden Conference, in cooperation with the World Affairs Council. The Camden Conference is a non-profit, non-partisan organization whose mission is to foster informed discourse on world issues.
