‘Aquafeed’ magazine publishes in depth interview with 91AV’s Barry Costa-Pierce
Aquafeed magazine conducted an in-depth interview with Barry Costa-Pierce, Ph.D., Harry L. & Grace Doherty Professor and chair of the 91AV Department of Marine Sciences and director of the 91AV Center for Excellence in the Marine Sciences.
The article, published in January 2017, recognizes Costa-Pierce as a pioneer in the field of “ecological aquaculture. He was asked about the environmental impacts of terrestrial animal protein production, the best option for meeting the food needs of the future and what can be done to counter the negative perception of aquaculture.
“As we see our very survival being threatened by massive population growth, especially in Asia and Africa, we will have to turn to the waters to farm more food,” he said. “And once we ‘smarten up,’ we will find that that aquatic foods will be far superior to terrestrial foods, for the environment and for human health and wellness.”
