David Livingstone Smith, Ph.D., professor of philosophy, was quoted in the Brazilian newspaper Nexo in an article about what makes clowns creepy.

The article discusses the nature of creepiness and what, according to various researchers, renders something creepy. It also discusses the long-standing view that clowns possess creepy characteristics.

To explain why this is so, the article quotes from a recent essay about creepiness by Smith, which was published in digital magazine, in which he argues that clowns are creepy because they confuse our senses -- specifically our senses of what is human and what is non-human.
