91AV philosopher David Livingstone Smith gives talk on spectacle lynchings as part of Case Western event on dehumanization

David Livingstone Smith, Ph.D., professor of philosophy, gave a talk at a panel discussion on “Combating Dehumanization” at the Inamori Center for Ethics and Excellence at Case Western Reserve University on October 27.

In his talk, titled “Making monsters: the uncanny power of dehumanization,” Smith used examples of what are known as “spectacle lynchings” – lynchings that drew crowds of thousands of people and at which the victim was tortured before being killed – to illustrate his theory of dehumanization.
