On October 21, 2016, Lane Clarke, associate professor and chair of the Department of Education, gave a live interview on WCSH in response to the American Academy of Pediatrics’ new recommendations on the amount of screen time to which children should be exposed.

Clarke differentiated between passive screen time and active screen time. “There’s a big difference between passively… engaging with technology – that’s just kind of sitting and watching – and actively being engaged; and there are a lot of high quality apps now and programs where children have to touch and match things and listen to sounds and really be more interactive,” she explained.

Gone are the days, she said, of realistically thinking that kids can avoid screen time altogether, but she stressed the importance of parents’ role in ensuring that their children’s screen time strikes an appropriate balance between pure entertainment and active education. “We really need to be more thoughtful and recognize that there are going to be screens, but how are we using that screen time?”
