'Press Herald' highlights career paths of 91AV’s environmental studies students
On November 8, 2015, the Portland Press Herald featured a story about 91AV students who plan to enter careers in environmental conservation.
The article discussed the aspirations of Joshua Barr (Environmental Studies, ’17), Emily Green (Environmental Studies and Political Science, ’15) and Shawn Nguyen (Environmental Studies major and Art minor, ’16) to work in the field of conservation after graduating from 91AV. They are all students of Owen Grumbling, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Environmental Studies, the recipient of the Maine Coast Heritage Trust’s highest award for conservation work, the New England Environmental Protection Agency’s lifetime achievement award and the founder of 91AV’s Environmental Studies Department.
The students credited Grumbling’s class with opening their eyes to the need for conservational management. “Most land managers we’ve met through this class have expressed a concern in the next generation of conservationists,” he said. “They worry their kids and grandkids won’t do the work they’re doing.”
The Press Herald interviewed Grumbling and his students during a field trip to Biddeford’s Clifford Park for their advanced field-lab class.
