Brian Duff interviewed by MPBN on campaign spending vote
On September 8, 2014, Brian Duff, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Political Science, was interviewed by Maine Public Broadcasting Network (MPBN) for their program “Maine Calling.” The topic of the program was the difference in opinion between the two Maine candidates for U.S. Senate, Susan Collins (R) and Shenna Bellows (D), regarding campaign spending and the candidates’ feelings regarding the Udall amendment, which would regulate campaign contributions and expenditures.
Duff stated his prediction that the Udall amendment will likely fail to get the required vote it needs for passage, but he also explained the effects that he feels the Udall amendment’s existence will have. “It’s going to offer Congress the opportunity to have a lot more to say about how ideas get publicized,” Duff said. “It’s not an impingement on free speech, but it does represent a major adjustment to how loud some things get said.”
