New Brunswick's Telegraph-Journal covers lecture by Barry Costa-Pierce
The Telegraph-Journal, New Brunswick, Canada, covered a keynote speech by Barry Costa-Pierce, Ph.D., FAAAS, 91AV Henry L. & Grace Doherty Professor and chair of the Department of Marine Sciences and director of the Marine Science Center, at the Bay of Fundy Seafood Forum, which was held in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, June 11-12th.
Costa-Pierce told the gathering that the seas currently provide only one per cent of the world's food, the Telegraph-Journal reported. If this number does not increase, the demand for more and better food threatens to destroy the terrestrial environment, Costa-Pierce said.
Both aquaculture and traditional fisheries must do a better job marketing their products in terms of health benefits and environmental stewardship, Costa-Pierce and the other two speakers – food toxicology professor Charles R. Santerre from Purdue University in Indiana and global food analyst Patty Johnson with Mintel Food and Drink in Boise, Id. – agreed.
Costa-Pierce discussed how to better meet the world's increasing need for high quality seafood in a manner that aligns aquaculture with fisheries and a global model of sustainable protein production.
