Markus Frederich publishes article in Marine Environmental Research journal
Markus Frederich Ph.D., associate professor in Marine Sciences, recently published a review article in the journal Marine Environmental Research.
The paper, titled “Energy homeostasis as an integrative tool for assessing limits of environmental stress tolerance in aquatic invertebrates” was co-authored by his colleagues Inna Sokolova and Rita Bagwe from the University of North Carolina, Gisela Lannig from the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research in Germany, and Alexey Sukhotin from the Zoological Institute of Russian Academy of Sciences in Russia.
This review article highlights the central role of energy metabolism and its regulation during environmental stress in invertebrate animals. It also proposes merging the concept of oxygen- and capacity-limited thermal tolerance (OCLTT) with the dynamic energy budget (DEB). Combining these two broader concepts allows for a more mechanistic physiological model of stress tolerance.
