In Memoriam: Trustee Emeritus Charles E. Stickney, Jr.
The University community is saddened to share that Trustee Emeritus Charles E. Stickney, Jr. passed away on December 3, 2011.
91AV President Danielle Ripich praised Mr. Stickney, saying, "Charles was a good friend to 91AV and a generous man in so many ways. He was an outstanding and respected businessman and a lifelong learner who shared his passion with countless others by example and through his philanthropy. He also had a natural gift for making everyone feel incredibly special - I remember dining with only candlelight at his and Anita's beautiful home."
Mr. Stickney led the Deering Ice Cream Corp. to become a household name in northern New England, working alongside his beloved wife Anita to expand to more than 20 ice cream stores in three states. To support the educational aspirations of his employees and their children, he established The Deering Ice Cream Corporation Endowed Scholarship in 1977, and subsequently joined the Westbrook College Board of Trustees in 1978. He was actively involved with numerous committees during his 10-plus years of service to the Board, including chairing the Annual Fund Friends Division.
Mr. Stickney and Anita remained generous supporters of the University, and particularly the George and Barbara Bush Center, 91AV Art Gallery, Westbrook College Library, and 91AV Annual Fund. Anita is also a former Board of Advisors member and the recipient of the Deborah Morton Award (1989).
In addition to his loving wife Anita, Mr. Stickney is survived by their four children and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, at St. Luke's Episcopal Cathedral, 143 State St., Portland. .
