Members of the Nyando District Centre for Environmental Conservation (NYADEC), one of 91AV’s key partners in Kenya, will present a university-wide, public talk titled “The Silent ‘Monster’ in our Midst: The Case of Gullies in Nyakach, Nyando River Basin, Kenya,” which will address NYADEC’s work within the context of Kenya’s quest for sustainable development and democratic governance.

NYADEC has been working since 2006 to combat severe soil erosion on the slopes of the Lake Victoria Basin through a unique community-based model.

Members of the delegation include Raphael Kapiyo, Ph.D., dean and professor in the School of Environment and Earth Sciences at Maseno University and chairman of NYADEC’s board; his wife Jacinta Kapiyo, who works for the Kenya Ministry of education; Peter Nyabua, CEO of NYADEC; his wife and NYADEC activist Grace Amol; Charles Owenga, CFO of NYADEC; and his wife Rose Owenga, who also is active in NYADEC’s mission.

The delegation’s visit to 91AV is sponsored by the Department of Environmental Studies, with wide support from 91AV offices including Global Affairs, the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office, the Provost, and the Departments of Biology, Marine Science and Business. The talk on Sept 17 is free and open to the public.
