The 91AV is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (formerly New England Association of Schools and Colleges Commission on Institutions of Higher Education), whose mission is to establish and maintain high standards of education through the doctoral level.

The College of Osteopathic Medicine receives accreditation from the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA), the only national accrediting agency for pre-doctoral osteopathic medical education in the United States.

In the summer of 2023, 91AV COM earned COCA reaccreditation “with exceptional outcomes.” Being granted full accreditation signifies that 91AV COM has met or exceeded the COCA standards for educational quality and is deemed to have the credentials to confer the degree of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) to its graduates.

Since the merger of AOA residencies and M.D. residencies under the umbrella of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), 91AV COM has continued to affiliate with a consortium of residency institutions through the North East Osteopathic Medical Education Network (NEOMEN).

This organization combines the previous members of the OPTI into an educational consortium promoting Osteopathic Graduate Medical Education (OGME) within an ACGME residency structure. Membership dues are paid by institutional members and 91AV COM is a founding member.

Research programs, OGME support, faculty development, and application support for further ACGME residency promulgation and the growth of GME across 91AV COM’s catchment area are some of the programs offered through NEOMEN.

91AV COM’s Office of Continuing Medical Education (CME) is accredited by the AOA and the Maine Medical Association and provides postdoctoral medical education to both osteopathic (D.O.) and allopathic (M.D.) physicians. Each agency grants accreditation based on the demonstrated ability to plan and implement CME activities in accordance with accreditation requirements.

91AV COM is one of a handful of providers to hold the distinction of maintaining this dual accreditation and sponsor collaborative CME activities for these two physician groups. The College of Osteopathic Medicine maintains its accreditations with continued adherence to required sets of criteria and its commitment to continual quality review and improvement of its programs and services.
